  1. Background

Nepal is an agricultural country. Over 80% of population is involve in agriculture, which contribute 41% of GDP. Agriculture plays a significant role in the national income generating process. Agriculture has played vital role in the foreign export sector because larger sector of agricultural products are exported to the foreign countries.

Though Nepal is an agricultural country, people have to import foods, vegetables and fruits from neighboring countries. Our country is not self sustained in foodstuff. Due to lack of innovation and exploration, our farmers are still using traditional type of tools. Farmers, who have used new seeds and fertilizers, could not have got the expected result due to either low quality of inputs or not the originals ones. There has been a high demand of organic vegetable, fruit and food stuff for the better health of people now a days.

Thinking this reality, Mountain Spirit started the agriculture project in Hangdewa VDC in Taplejung district on 12th April 2007 with the activities like providing agriculture training on vegetable farming, distributing the genetically engineered vegetable seeds to the local people testing the soil of the area to grow the most favorable vegetables with supporting in the water supply.

Hangdewa VDC is located in Taplejung district of Mechi zone in the eastern development region of Nepal. It is surrounded by India to the east, Sankhuwasabha to west china to the north and Terathum (Koshi zone) to the south. Hangdewa VDC-1 with the ethnic group of population has the panoramic view of mountain Kanchenjunga with gompas and the monastery where most people follow the Buddhism and their main occupation is farming. Besides that few of them are in abroad for the services and of them are educated but still women are not educated due to their high involvement in household chores

It has the high prospective of seasonal vegetables and off seasonal vegetables as well. It can be able to fulfill the 20% of market. There is transportation facility of roads and air both. Due to the road to Kanchenjunga Mountain and the famous Pathibhara temple the project area is more effective for the sustainable project. But due to lack of government support it has not been able to utilize the land. They are in need of advocacy and advertisement of organic vegetable farming through different Media, seminars and workshops as well

To know the impact of the project we conducted one day’s workshop for which 23 participants attended and shared their problems and ideas. Participants were from various backgrounds like teachers, social workers, community mobilizers, religious group and other stakeholders. On the basis of monitoring and evaluation, workshop with involving the 27 participants, group discussion and feedback of user groups, this proposal has been formulated and contained the findings and information revealed from key informants.

Since the previous project like Organic vegetable farming in Hangdewa was successful with the highly people participation and the project area was located near by the transportation of roads and air services, local market facility with technical support of other NGOs, it is most appropriate to conduct other projects like advocacy of farming to make people known to others about organic vegetables. The project related to greenhouse to protect the siblings can be conducted. Trainings and workshop to enrich the capacity of people can be conducted. By this people within and the outside the district will be highly benefitted from the organic vegetables. People in the previous project area were highly motivated and interested to upgrade the farming with their success.
